The Gift of God is eternal life through Jesus:

“For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”
Romans 6:23

The Gift of God in one word IS:    JESUS

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
John 3:16

Remember, it is a gift. That means it is free, you don’t have to earn it or work for it. All you have to do is accept it.  Jesus is holding your gift out to you, all you have to do is take it.  Won’t you receive your gift today?

Maybe you say, “Sounds great! Eternal life. I’ll take it…or at least I would… but I don’t know how. I don’t see a box or package to pick up and unwrap.”

This isn’t a gift you receive with your hands, but with your heart. Receiving the gift of eternal life is not hard. You must recognize that you are a sinner first of all.

Yes you are. The Bible (God’s Holy Word) says:

“For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;”
Romans 3:23

Yes ALL. Not “all but ___(insert your name here)___”. We have ALL sinned. What does that mean? That means that we ALL have done, or said, or thought something that God does not approve of.  Something God says is wrong. You probably know that in the list of ten commandments God says “thou shalt not kill”, so you’re probably aware that murder is a sin. Now, chances are you have not killed anyone. Does that mean you have not sinned? Nope. Murder is not the ONLY sin by any means. Here’s a list of the ten commandments God gave to Moses…

  1. Thou shalt have no other gods before me.
  2. Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven images.
  3. Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord in vain.
  4. Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.
  5. Honor thy father and thy mother.
  6. Thou shalt not kill.
  7. Thou shalt not commit adultery.
  8. Thou shalt not steal.
  9. Thou shalt not bear false witness.
  10. Thou shalt not covet.

Breaking one of these ten rules would be a sin. Now, breaking these rules are not the ONLY sins, but I’d say it’s a fair guess to say that everyone has broken one of these rules at least once. Maybe you haven’t killed anyone or had an affair or robbed a bank, but maybe you stole a candy bar when you were little like I did. Maybe secretly pined for the new bike your friend got in 3rd grade (that would be coveting!) or maybe you blamed a younger sibling for knocking over a lamp as a kid (breaking #9). I doubt you made it through your whole childhood without breaking # 5 at least a time or two.

And you know, even if you HAD managed to go your whole childhood without breaking a single one even once, what about the teen years? College? You never, ever in your whole life wished you had something someone else did or drove off with one of the bank’s pens. You’ve remembered EVERY Sabbath (that is you’ve set aside a day each week to rest AND worship God)??

The only Man (or woman!) who has ever been 100% sinless was also 100% God… Jesus. (See 2 Corinthians 5:21; Hebrews 4:14-15; 1 Peter 2:21-22)  The bible says in 1 John 1:8, 10 that if we say we have no sin we are fooling ourselves and calling God a liar (which I think would definitely qualify as something God does not approve of…i.e. a sin).

So I’m a sinner. You’re a sinner. So what? Why is that important to know? It’s CRUCIAL to know. Why? Because sinners go to Hell. Yes they do. God punishes sin. Sin costs. The sins have to be paid for with death. I told you that way back up at the top, there, when I quoted Romans 6:23, here it is again:

“For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”
Romans 6:23

See that word ‘but’ in there? That basically means that what is on one side of that word is completely opposite from what is on the other. So “death” there isn’t just physical death, like die in a car wreck or from cancer or a heart attack death, but ETERNAL death. In a word- Hell.

The Bible says:

“But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”
Revelation 21:8

And

Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God.
I Corinthians 6:9-10

So if we sin we pay for that sin by going to Hell. I don’t know about you, but I don’t want to go to Hell! And I don’t want you to go to Hell. Know what? God doesn’t want us to go to Hell either. He loves us so VERY much that He made a way for us to not have to go to Hell.

“But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.”
Romans 5:8

The Bible also says:

“And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission.”
Hebrews 9:22

No remission of sins without the shedding of blood. (Remission means forgiveness… a pardon if you will. It’s the “get out of Hell free card” sotospeak.) So the only way to get rid of the sin record we have  (since we’re all sinners) is for blood to be shed. If blood is shed, then our sin debt is forgiven (paid for) and we no longer have to go to Hell, but can have eternal life in Heaven.

Whose blood will God accept as payment for our sins? Only Jesus’ blood.

“Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.”
John 14:6

The Father is God. Remember John 3:16… “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten son…”? God is in Heaven and that’s where He wants us to be, too. You can’t get in to Heaven if your sins haven’t been forgiven. But remember Romans 5:8…”Christ died for us”.

Jesus Christ died for us. He died for me and He died for you. He died to pay our sin debt. His blood was shed IN PLACE OF OURS. He died so we don’t have to. He died so we could have forgiveness of our sins. He died to give us eternal life. He did it because He loves us.

So how do we accept this wondrous, glorious, precious gift? How can we be saved from eternal death in Hell?

The Bible says:

“That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.”
Romans 10:9

But wait? Raised Him from the dead? Yes, God raised Him from the dead. After Jesus hung on the cross and shed His blood for our sins and died, His body was laid in a tomb and a giant stone rolled in front of it. (See Matthew 27:57-60) Guards were set to watch the tomb to make sure the body was not stolen. (See Matthew 27:62-66) Three days later when they came to open the tomb to prepare the body for burial (they couldn’t do it before because they were observing the Sabbath, so they did no work and preparing the body was work) they found the stone had been rolled away. There was an angel sitting on the stone and the tomb was empty. Jesus’ body was not there. (See Matthew 28:1-9) He appeared to several people after His death (See Matthew 28:9-10; Mark 16:9-14; Luke 24:13-43; John 20:19-31, 21:1-25) and then ascended (went up) into Heaven to sit on the right hand of God. (See Mark 16:19-20; Luke 24:50-53)

Here is another passage I want to share with you. Hebrews 10:12-19. It talks about Jesus having paid a lasting payment (never expires) for our sins and then afterwards sitting down on the right hand of God. It also tells us that once he has perfected us (made us righteous by forgiving us) we are perfected forever (righteous for ever… SAVED forever). It ALSO tells us that the Lord has promised to put his laws in our hearts and minds and that he will remember our sins no more. Then it tells us that no other offering ever has to be made for our sins, and that through Jesus’ blood, we can boldly (have a right to) enter Heaven (the holiest). What a beautiful passage!

“But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God; From henceforth expecting till his enemies be made his footstool. For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified. Whereof the Holy Ghost also is a witness to us: for after that he had said before, This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, saith the Lord, I will put my laws into their hearts, and in their minds will I write them; And their sins and iniquities will I remember no more. Now where remission of these is, there is no more offering for sin. Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus,”
Hebrews 10:12-19

So are you ready to receive your gift? Are you ready to receive Jesus as YOUR personal saviour and be forgiven of your sins and be able to enter Heaven and live eternally? If you are, why don’t you tell Jesus that?

That’s the HOW, by the way. Remember Romans 10:9? Here is another verse that tells you HOW…

“For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
Romans 10:13

Tell Jesus you realize that you’ve sinned and want Him to forgive you and save you. It doesn’t matter the words you use to tell Him, but in case you’re stumped as to how to phrase it, here is a sample prayer:

“Dear Jesus, I know I am a sinner and ask You to please forgive me and take me to Heaven when I die. I believe that You died on the cross to pay for my sins and save me from Hell. I’m placing my trust in You to be my Saviour. Amen.”

If you just prayed that prayer (or something similar) and meant it from your heart, then you have just received the Gift of God! =) PRAISE GOD, you will live eternally in Heaven! =) God promises!

“He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.”
John 3:36

“Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.”
John 5:24

“All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.”
John 6:37

“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness”
1 John 1:9

If you have come in faith to Jesus, by accepting Him and trusting Him (and only Him… not being good or being baptized or going to church, but Him and Him alone) to save you and get you into Heaven, then you can be sure you are saved and going to Heaven. He has promised you.

God is not going to take the gift back. EVER. Once you have it, it is yours. That is why He calls it EVERLASTING life. It’s permanent. PRAISE GOD!
